Invisalign: The Invisible Braces… no, really!

What is Invisalign? Much like dental braces, Invisalign works by re-aligning teeth into a more straight and natural position. They are being used more and more these days and are said to be a good alternative to the metal braces that dentists (including dentists in Palm Beach) have traditionally used.

Exact calculations are carried out on the teeth using advanced computer technology. A three-dimensional model of the patient’s teeth is then rendered and an accurate set of see-through aligners (sometimes referred to as “clear braces”) is then made. These “clear aligners” are said to be specifically matched to the patient’s own teeth exactly in order to give a more accurate form of treatment

Because of the similarities between Invisalign and standard braces, dental jobs that require the use of these aligners are therefore almost exact. And just like orthodontic treatment (braces), the procedure is highly skilled and thus dentists would be required to have the relevant qualifications obtained through dental courses.

The dentist usually begins by taking x-rays, as well as dental impressions/moulds of the patient’s teeth. The three-dimensional model is then produced using a CT scan. After the model has been digitally made, technicians can then move the individual teeth (electronically) into their final positions in accordance with the dentist’s instruction. From here the aligners can then be produced ready to be worn.

In order for Invisalign to function properly it is generally accepted that the patient wears the device for 20-22 hours a day; brushing teeth and eating food being the few times that the aligner can be removed.

It is also recommended that a person changes (if they so wish) their aligner once every two weeks and to have regular checkups with their local dentist. This treatment can last anywhere from six months to 18 months.
